Ever visualized $87 billion, the amount President Bush announced on national television that he was going to ask the Congress to grant him to continue the fight on terror in Iraq and Afghanistan. President Bush asked for this money on September 7th, 2003, for the fiscal year, beginning October 1, 2004. Since before then, to the end of September, 2007, the United States has dedicated approximately $315 billion dollars to the cause.
Have a visual representation of this huge amount of money after the jump
It is impossible for anyone to visualize such huge amounts of money. Lets have a look…..
One dollar … it’s roughly 6 inches long, and 2½ inches wide. It’s roughly as thick as a regular piece of paper.
$1 will buy you a chance to win up to $3000 with a Connecticut scratch-off lottery ticket called the “Emerald Green Tripler.”
Six dollars … set side by side, roughly 12 inches long, and 7½” inches wide. Very roughly, a little longer, but narrower than a sheet of paper.
$6 will buy you about than 2 gallons of gas (at $3.00 a gallon), but you could only buy 1½ gallons of milk, which sells for $3.99 a gallon in Charlotte, NC.
Three Thousand dollars … roughly the thickness of a ream of paper, 2 inches thick or 500 sheets. If you made a single stack, it would be a foot high.
You could buy a 50″ Widescreen, Flat Panel, HD-Ready Plasma TV for this amount of money.

Seventy-Two Thousand dollars … is about the size of a whole box of copier paper. This is roughly what it would cost you to buy a 2007 Jaguar XK8 2dr Convertible.

Three-Hundred-and-Sixty Thousand dollars … A stack 5 feet tall. Shorter than the average American man. If you made a single stack, it would be 120 feet high.
You can buy a 3-bedroom, 2 bath, 1973-sq. foot condo in Las Vegas, Nevada for this amount of money.
Nine Million dollars … The pile is 5 feet tall, 10 feet long, and 6¼ feet wide. A single stack of dollar bills in this amount would be 3,000 feet high.
This horde is comparable in size to a single compact car. You could buy 489 of them for the amount, though, with enough cash left over to fill up the gas tanks of 162 of them.
But this amount of money is more than four times what you can expect to earn in your entire life, if you are an American with a college degree.
Nine-Hundred Million dollars… The mound of cash is now 20 feet tall, 50 feet long, and 31¼ feet wide. The single stack of dollar bills is now climbing to 300,000 feet, or 56.8 miles.
It is about half as long as a conventional tennis court.
This is the dollar amount for the damage caused by a natural disaster, according to insurance claims filed by victims in four states that were affected by a category 3 hurricane, (Dennis) in July, 2005.
This amount of money is what an ideal elementary school class size (400 students) can expect to earn in their lifetimes, combined.
Fifteen billion dollars … This pile of money is 60 feet high, 150 feet long, and 62½ feet deep.
This is the amount of money that the US Army has paid to Halliburton (a company once led by Vice President Dick Cheney) since late 2001 in no-bid contracts to perform services such as delivering food and fuel and constructing housing for U.S. Troops around the world, and has been persistently dogged with allegations for fraud, poor quality, overpricing, and other abuses. (On July 13, 2006, the US Army announced that it would end its dealings with the company.)
Eighty-Seven Billion dollars … This is what the President asked for on September 7th, 2003. It is 100 feet tall, 250 feet long, and 125 feet wide. A stack of singles would be 28,998,000 feet, or over 5,492 miles, or a round-trip between Washington DC and Los Angeles, California. (2,650 miles, one-way).
A Boeing 737-200 jet is 100 feet long. You could fit 2 of those jets nose to nose along the length of this pile, and have room to spare.
If we spread the $87 billion over an American football field, we would not be able to see much of the game. The players would be buried in 55 feet of money.
$87 billion is more than all of the states’ current budget deficits, combined. $87 billion is more than twice the amount we’re spending on Homeland Security.
One-Hundred-Sixty-Six Billion dollars … this represents the total amount of money President Bush spent in Iraq & Afghanistan by the beginning of fiscal year 2004 : the $87 billion he asked for, plus the $79 billion he’d already spent.
You can barely see the man down in the corner.
This pile is 500 feet long at its longest point, which is quite a bit longer than an American football field. The roof opening of the Reliant Stadium in Houston, Texas, is 500 feet long. This pile of money is still 100 feet tall, and 125 feet wide. If you stacked the bills in a single column, it would be 55,333,200 feet tall, or almost 10,500 miles, or 1.68 times the distance between Washington DC and Baghdad, Iraq.
$166 billion is $568 for every man, woman and child in the United States. It’s $3,269 for every person in Iraq and Afghanistan.
One-Hundred-Ninety-One Billion dollars … April 17, 2004 : “The President wants Congress to grant him another $25 billion to continue the fight in Iraq and Afghanistan, but members of both parties in Congress indicated strong reservations about giving the Pentagon the free hand it is seeking to spend the money.”
“Responding to tough questions from senators in both parties, (Deputy Defense Secretary Paul D.) Wolfowitz acknowledged that, with war costs running about $4.5 billion a month, far more money will be needed next year than is now on the table. ‘There will be a request for a full year supplemental early next year. It will sure be much larger than $25 billion,’ he said.”
Two-Hundred-Seventy-Two Billion dollars …
UPDATE : April 25, 2005
Senate OKs $81B In Spending for Iraq, Afghanistan
WASHINGTON | The Senate on Thursday overwhelmingly approved $81 billion for wars in Iraq and Afghanistan in a spending bill that would push the total cost of combat and reconstruction past $300 billion.
Both the Senate and House versions of the measure would give President Bush much of the money he requested but the bills differ over what portion should go to military operations.
The Pentagon says it needs the money by the first week of May, so Senate and House negotiators are expected to act quickly to send the president a final version of the spending bill. (AP)
This pile is 250 feet long, and 125 feet wide. It’s 320 feet high at the tallest point, which is as tall as St. Steven’s Tower, the clock tower that houses Big Ben at Parliament, in London, England.
Three-hundred-fifteen billion dollars …
Update : July 21, 2006
This is the amount of money the US has allocated for the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, to be spent by September 30, 2006, the end of the fiscal year. And the Senate is working on a spending bill that will add another $50 billion more in spending for 2007.
This pile is 125 feet wide, 200 feet deep, and 450 feet tall.
450 feet is the height of a 38-story building. It’s the hieght of the Millenium Wheel in London. It is also the height of the Luxor Hotel in Las Vegas and the Louisiana State Capitol Building.
If you were to stack the money in a single stack, your stack would be 19,887 miles tall, enough to wrap the Moon at its equator almost 3 times.

6This is absolute madness… Bush is a madman in the most screwed up way. Why is no one standing up in the congress, and telling him to stop f****** about and sit down and think about the families he’s destroyed, and the millions that suffer in America.

7“One if by Land and the Lantern is Lit…”
Our Constitutional Republic has been destroyed. The foundation of American Liberty has been either distorted, erased or forgotten. Our entire planet is ruled by an oligarchy of established bankers, oilmen and global corporations. We the People find ourselves enslaved and intoxicated by an economic system that by design, destroys the prosperity, development and education of the Worlds Citizenry.
The Federal Reserve and its fiat monetary policy need to be abolished. The unconstitutional (and enslaving) 16th Amendment needs to be repealed. Congress needs to listen to the people and convene an Article V Convention so we may work towards restoring the Constitutional Republic that our “elected” officials have stolen from us and sold to the highest bidder within the corporatocracy.
Our government is allowing the corporate elite to successfully merge Canada, Mexico and the United States into a single supra-national entity, the North American Union - complete with its new currency the “Amero”, which will be ushered in just after the fabricated collapse of our economy. The fascist Tories within our government are working towards another false-flag attack similar to 9/11 to “justify” an attack on Iran and the further erosion of our civil liberties in America.
A Halliburton subsidiary, KBR has already been awarded a $385 million contract to construct “detention centers” in the United States. Any puppet President of the United States now has the power to enact martial law and fully transform America into a police state. The conditioned-complacent public in this country and all the Worlds Citizenry need to act now to save what few liberties we have left. Rediscover Patriotism. Resurrect Dissent. The time has come to ascend upon Washington and RESTORE THE REPUBLIC!

Mr.Johnson, what it is buying the US is a bad name, mis trust in america, the categorizing of americans as wholesale yes men for firstly voting in gwb and secondly, keeping him in power under this morbid fear of safety and security.
americas foreign policy is dictatorial and very unforgiving. Its your way or the highway..
The motives behind these wars are also highly questionable..
Americans must realize that there is a whole wide world that exists outside of its borders..
Im very aware of the anti-bush camp within your country who see the ills of this man..
Its time to take charge and get america great once more.. You were at one stage..
The spelling of references to your country indicates my dis- pleasure of anything american at this stage..
And believe you me,Im very afraid of the giant called China in these times..

9This behaviour sounds mighty familiar. The movie Marie Antionette summarised a similar story, where the working class was starving as its king was spending his entire budget on financing America’s independence war - to show off France’s power.
If history is anything to go by, George W Bush may be decapitated in the near future…

12If u want to be a drama queen about it just use pennies instead of singles and the stacks will be even larger. So what? I have to visualize Mt. Everest size piles to figure out its a lot money. We are definitely a country of douchbags if this impresses anyone or changes anybodys mind about spending that money.

13And yet we still can’t seem to find money in the budget to buy books for our schools, give medical attention to the poor, or foster programs to help people to better themselves.
How tragic is that?

15Haha I love everyone who always says Bush is terrible, and the war is terrible, and we would be fine without it. What I think you don’t realize is that you have no idea what would happen without the war. Would we be terrorized again? The fact is you only know what has happened WITH the war, so your opinion is obviously biased. It is well known that war is political suicide. If you would like terrorists and everything the stand for and everyone related to them to be free to rule people and ruin others’, as well as our own lives, then sure, let’s stop the war. Even democrats now agree that the only way to “get out of Iraq”, as you so eloquently put it, is to finish off our war efforts. It’s amazing to me how you completely disregard those fighting for peace. People are dying for who? Us? Well not according to you. According to you they are dying for nothing. Without a draft, people don’t sign up to die for nothing. The only way to win is to “make th eother poor, dumb bastards die for their country.”
That’s my view. And to those of you who have to hate some particular political figure in order to feel good about yourself, go find someone who doesn’t preserve your way of life, that is to say in peace, war not on the homefront, and etc.

24Lets take a quick look at the way Republicans look atthe world. They just announced $35,000 bonus for officers to re-up. A $20,000 bonus for enlisted personel to re-up. Most of the reconstrution money is lost to graft and corruption. Planeloads of cash disapear. 200,000 rifles are missing. Pay tribal chiefs millions for their loyalty. Pay Blackwater employees 500-1,000 dollars a day. Most hospitals and clinics in Iraq ar without medicines and supplies because most of that has found its way to the black market. No-bid contracts, Most reconstruction projects are done so shoddy as to be unusuable etc. But last week Bush and the repubs killed the Childrens Med Ins Bill for being to costly. Whats wrong with this picture.

31I must say that this should come as no shock to anyone. The amount of money spent is one of the few facts they tell Americans in the media. The BIGGEST problem in my opinion is the complacency and lethargy of the American people. Our actions (lack of action) are now one of the greatest threats to our existence. In years past the world despised the U.S. because of the way The State met its agendas around the globe. They despised our government, not U.S. citizens. Now it’s 2007…7 years past the hopes of the new millennium and the death machine just keeps on a truckin”…Open your minds America,it is scary and revealing and true but you must look at where we’ve been led by these war criminals for many years. The worst part is that we all have this blood on our hands.Ignoring the facts and ingesting cnn or fox will tell you nothing but what the State wants you to hear. You must seek out the truth and spread it like a virus until their vaccines can no longer keep us at bay.If you need a starting point go see The Nation,CounterPunch,Democracy Now or GNN.I would not say totally trust any news source 100%,just cross check facts with the mainstream media and investigate. The more truly aware you are the more prepared you will be when someone wants to know”what’s wrong with the world today?”.Think about it!

The thing that is MOST amuzing is our deficit is SHRINKLY RAPIDLY under Bush, yet no ones seems to care about that.

41It’s easy to sit at your computer and be amazed by this fantastic attempt at wrangling this amount in the human mind. but take a dollar bill out of your wallet and try to imagine a stack 400 feet high of those things. this may well be the most unbelievable thing i have ever seen. you cannot put a price on human life, but think for a second: is “the fight against” terrorism really worth $300 billion?
no. a free healthcare system could emerge, better benefits for the poor and needy, and foreign aid and charity.
even harder to imagine is what could be archived with this much money. the us is basically doing what countless, far poorer countries have done in the past by printing money. very soon the united states will see economic collapse if this is allowed to continue. after seeing this i am certain that no one but the most deluded congressman or bush himself could still support this backwards display of power.

61I love the way war supporters claim we were “defending” ourselves or our freedom when we invaded Iraq. Iraq was never a threat to us, and neither was Iran, but we have invaded them 3 times. Our ruling class wants us to live in fear so we will buy into their wars. We are the most militarized nation on earth. Who can claim to need 750 military bases and still claim that we are peaceful? We use our weapons to enforce corporate policy and protect corporate interests. The constant flow of money into war will bankrupt the U.S while making trillionaires out of billionaires who will invest in other nation’s futures. Liberty will be one of the first casualties.

62Why don’t they just use the 3.3 Trillion dollars that they already stole from the U.S. Taxpayers in last few years?, or perhaps, spend some of the $600 billion to $1 trillion in profits laundered ANNUALLY from the illegal Global Drug Trade that the Central Intelligence Agency controls. Oh, that’s right, why would they spend the money that they have, so far, already successfully stolen, when they can just steal some more (through Congress) to continue killing innocent people for the control of the region that sits atop the remaining energy reserves on the planet. Anyone who supports this Elite Fascist Agenda should volunteer to scrape up the remains of all the innocent people slaughtered in these one-sided slaughter-fests the U.S. Government calls Wars.

66Those soldiers that are fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan are not fighting for freedom, democracy or to defend their country, that’s only what they’ve been led to believe, and you can’t blame them for that.
Now the U.S. has two choices, save face and get out of Iraq/Afghanistan, which would probably lead to the Middle East igniting like a flash fire, oil and gas prices would jump up and it would compromise the stability of the modern world or then everything could go fine. That’s the game of Russian roulette they’d have to play.
Or then the U.S. can stay and try to hold up this house of cards which will consume a tremendous amount of resources, lots of lives will be lost and it will take a long time, and probably end up falling apart anyway.

68the united states are hogs and all they want is money. thats all this country is about. too much money is being wasted on wars. money is being wasted on bombs, missals guns etc. they are used to kill inocent families and children. test scores show that the united states is educationally behind other developed countries in europe and asia. we need to take a course of action to improve our educational process.
also the war is meaningless. i hate it especially since my dads side of the family lives in gaza.
i am 12 years old.

70To comment on what someone said about using the money to help the poor and needy, the poor and needy never gave anyone a job or produced anything in society. The reality of war is that it does produce jobs. Both in the military sector when all the equipment must be replaced, modernized and in the rebuilding efforts when cities must be replaced. The problem is when a president sends its country into an unjust war and lets the war drag on for too long.
What we need to do is use that money on modernizing the infrastructure here in the US. Let’s build new roads, bridges, let’s scrap AmTrak and get a bullet train like the rest of the modern world. Let’s put it up and down the East Coast since these damn airlines are so unreliable.
Let’s fix our health care, give our women more leave after giving birth so they can bond with their babies and raise them the right way at least the first two years of life. Maybe then we won’t have so many idiots running through the school system.
Let’s save more American lives and bring the soldiers home.
We went to Iraq to find WMDs. They are not there. Saddam Hussein is already dead. Mission accomplished. Let’s go. Let the Sunnis and Shiites duke it out if they want to. We didn’t go there to help the two groups mend their old grudges that date back into biblical times.

71To reply to the other fella that says “liberty will be the first fatality” It already is a fatality. Liberty died when the Patriot Act was passed. A law was just passed to protect phone companies from cooperating with the government’s eavesdropping and data mining programs. I read the FBI also wants to get biophysical profiles of EVERYONE to help “fight” terrorism.
Yeah right…
$50 says that if Obama becomes president and he tries to change things around too much, he’s going to be the next JFK. I hope he does change things in DC. But the way this government has been acting lately, I don’t get surprised by anything anymore.
Cable TV, all mind control, baby. Show something enough times, people start to believe in it. I believed in it.

73When do you think the Feds will implement the Amero currency?
Do you think the Amero will be just as worthless as the current dollar? Do you think things will be far worse if they do bring in the Amero?
What things can we expect to see (economy, society, housing, food, energy, foreign relations ect..) when they do bring in the Amero?
If I were you I would start buying gold and silver coins which I am.
Because those coins will be worth more than the dollar and the Amero.

74Jamin,
Are you stupid or just a trust fund baby?
“Just curious if you folks have ever been outraged by our spending on Soc Security, Medicare and Medicaid? In 2006 ALONE we spent more than 3 TIMES the amount of the big pile above! $1.06 Trillion with a T.”
Hmmm. I think I would rather spend that money on American health and well being- (and money that goes back into the local economy), than on destroying another country in an endless war that has accomplished nothing but create more jihadists. I assume you are planning on giving your social security to charity?
